The next day was the summer solstice, an important holiday for any practicing witch. To tell the truth, I’d been so preoccupied with Lionel’s health and Anna’s death — and Sela’s disappearance — that I’d almost forgotten the solstice was upon us.

However, I got a text from Valerie Monroe right after lunch, reminding me we were meeting at her house that evening.

Seven o’clock at my place. Wear your good clothes. Everyone needs to be there…we have business to attend to.

I assumed that ominous allusion to “business” meant that we’d be dealing with Elise Figg in some way. What shape those repercussions would take, I didn’t know for sure. She might simply be shunned for a time, not allowed to have dealings with anyone else in the coven or to take part in our rituals until we all decided it was all right to allow her to take part again.

Or the elder witches — my mother and Valerie and Grace — could determine it was better to just kick Elise out altogether, forcing her to go solo, or, more likely, to find a different coven that would take her in. I couldn’t say the three of them would be out of bounds for doing so, but….

Elise had seemed genuinely remorseful for what she’d done, but it was possible no other covens would take her in after they learned what she’d done. We had four operating in the general Salem area, and we were all on friendly terms. When it came to who was in or out of a particular coven, it was more a matter of style rather than a difference of bedrock principles.

I kind of doubted anyone in Salem would have approved of Elise caving to a blackmailer and casting a hex on a completely innocent hedgehog.

But since I wouldn’t know the outcome of the situation unless I attended the ritual, I went home and changed out of my jeans and sandals and summery top — black, true, but sleeveless and lightweight — and into the long black dress and lace-up boots I usually wore to coven meetings. My pointy hat would get to ride on the front seat, since trying to wear it while I was driving was a total pain.

I’d already told Noah I was having dinner with my mother that night, and he’d told me to have a good time, and maybe we’d get together on Thursday. Just something else that was completely refreshing about the guy — he always seemed happy when we were able to see each other, but he also never pressed me when I had my own plans, didn’t act needy or upset that I’d had a life of my own before we got together.

Could someone actually be so perfect?

It sure appeared that way.

Milo and Lionel seemed fine with me going out for the evening — probably because I ate an early dinner and fed the dog some table scraps, and let both of them out again to enjoy the mild temperatures before I had to head over to Valerie’s house.
